Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer reveal their BBC FA Cup TV picks and explain how matches are shared with ITV

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer hopes to be at FA Cup clash with rivals Sunderland

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has expressed his excitement at the upcoming FA Cup clash between Newcastle and Sunderland, hoping to attend the match either as a fan or as a pundit. Shearer, who is now a co-host on Match of The Day, revealed his enthusiasm for the Tyne-Wear derby, stating that it has been a while since the two teams faced each other.

Lineker and Shearer discuss the draw and TV coverage

Gary Lineker, in a recent episode of The Rest is Football podcast, joined in the conversation with Shearer about the draw. Lineker expressed his anticipation for the match, saying, "Sunderland versus Newcastle! It's been a while since one of those." Shearer responded by saying that he has already sent a text message asking for tickets and that the draw was brilliant. He further added, "Arsenal versus Liverpool and Sunderland versus Newcastle – amazing! Can't wait. Something to look forward to."

BBC and ITV share the rights to broadcast FA Cup matches

Lineker went on to reveal that the BBC and ITV will alternate in picking which matches to broadcast. He said, "We'll be doing one of those games, because we obviously alternate with picks with ITV." This means that either BBC or ITV will cover the Newcastle versus Sunderland match.

Shearer's efforts to secure the rights for the Tyne-Wear derby

Shearer, eager to ensure that the Newcastle versus Sunderland match is covered by the BBC, has already been in touch with the BBC bosses. He stated, "I've already been on to the top guys about that Gary, we know Arsenal and Liverpool are going to play reserve sides, we might as well do Sunderland and Newcastle where we know that no one can really afford to be beaten and won't put reserve sides out." However, Lineker jokingly suggested covering the Arsenal versus Liverpool match instead, citing the cold weather up north. Shearer playfully responded with a colorful remark, and the pair laughed it off.
