The Injury That Almost Derailed His Move to Cardiff
Greg Halford, a former Premier League star, has shared the harrowing story of how he almost missed out on a move to Cardiff City due to a devastating ankle injury. The 38-year-old defender suffered the injury during a match against Leeds just two months before the proposed transfer.
A Ruptured Ankle and a Race Against Time
In an interview for the Under The Cosh podcast, Halford revealed that he ruptured every ligament in his ankle, fearing that his career was over. Despite the severity of the injury, he managed to make a remarkable recovery and returned to action just four weeks later.
A Dream Transfer Despite Lingering Pain
Halford's determination paid off when he secured his dream transfer to Cardiff City in January 2017. However, his ankle was still not fully healed at the time of the move. He underwent a medical examination and scans, which revealed that the ligaments were not fully attached. Despite this, Cardiff manager Neil Warnock insisted on having Halford on the team.
A Successful Stint at Cardiff City
During his time at Cardiff, Halford made 33 appearances before eventually joining Aberdeen. He currently plays for Essex-based side Hashtag United. In addition to his injury ordeal, Halford recently opened up about his autism diagnosis, admitting that he had never shared this information with anyone in football until recently.
