Fans and Fighters Slam Colby Covington for Vile Joke About Leon Edwards Late Dad at Heated UFC 296 Press Conference

MMA fans and fighters alike are expressing their outrage towards Colby Covington for a tasteless joke he made about the late father of Leon Edwards at the UFC 296 pre-fight press conference. The controversial Covington, known for his provocative statements, referenced Edwards' deceased father in an attempt to get under his skin. The comment did not sit well with Edwards, who retaliated by throwing a water bottle at Covington. Security stepped in to prevent a brawl from erupting prematurely.

Crass Joke and Swift Reaction

During the intense press conference, Covington made a crass remark about Edwards' late father, stating, "I'm bringing you to the seventh layer of hell. We'll say what's up to your dad there." Edwards, who lost his father to murder at the age of 13, immediately snapped at the mention. He hurled a water bottle at Covington, who was dressed in a George Washington-esque suit and a MAGA hat. Security immediately intervened to prevent further escalation.

Outrage from Fans and Fighters

MMA fans were left shocked and disgusted by Covington's comment, with many taking to social media to express their outrage. One fan tweeted, "Colby Covington took it too far at the press conference today." Another added, "'It's just promotion bro.' No, the f**k it ain't." The comment drew criticism not only for its insensitivity but also for being poor fight promotion.

Edwards' fellow fighters also condemned Covington for his tasteless joke. Muhammad Mokaev called Covington a "POS" (piece of s**t) for talking smack about Edwards' father. Lerone Murphy expressed his disapproval, stating, "Scumbag Colby. People need to be held accountable for their words. Hope he gets KOd." Belal Muhammad, a back-up fighter for the main event, even referenced a past incident where Jorge Masvidal assaulted Covington, claiming that Covington got what he deserved.

Edwards' Response

After being restrained by security, Edwards composed himself and didn't hold back when asked about Covington's joke. He referred to Covington as a "piece of s**t" and warned him to maintain the same energy backstage.
