Arsenal Complains to Premier League Referees Over Treatment of Bukayo Saka as Shocking Stat Revealed

Arsenal Takes Action

Arsenal has filed a complaint with the Premier League referees chiefs regarding the rough treatment that Bukayo Saka has been receiving from opponents. The Gunners believe that Premier League players are not being adequately punished for fouling the England international and are often escaping yellow cards from referees.

Bringing Attention to the Issue

This matter was raised during a conversation with the Premier League refereeing body last year, as part of the regular dialogue that top clubs engage in throughout the season. Arsenal has referred back to multiple incidents to emphasize their point.

Saka's Foul Play

Bukayo Saka, 22, was the third-most fouled player in the league in 2023, with 87 fouls against him. He trailed behind Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew (117) and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes (92). The concern has been amplified as Saka has been carrying an Achilles injury for most of the season and was also forced off the pitch during a Champions League match against Lens on October 3.

Impact on Saka's Form

Saka's form has suffered as a result of the rough treatment, with only one goal in his last six Premier League appearances. This complaint is also of interest to England manager Gareth Southgate, who needs Saka to be fully fit for the upcoming Euros in Germany.

Arteta's Perspective

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has repeatedly spoken about Saka needing to learn how to protect himself from dangerous tackles and challenges, rather than relying on referees. Arteta's frustration was evident during Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Brighton on December 17, when James Milner fouled Saka multiple times. Arteta's reaction on the touchline earned him a yellow card, his fourth of the season.

It's worth noting that Arteta previously avoided an FA charge after criticizing VAR officials as "embarrassing" and "a disgrace" following a controversial 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on November 4.
