Labour leader insists he has proper policies despite criticism
Sir Keir Starmer has defended himself against accusations that voters are unclear about his policies, claiming that critics have not been "paying attention." In response to his New Year's speech, which lacked new announcements, Starmer pointed to "five big mission launches, big speeches, backing documents" as evidence of his plan for No10.
Critics claim voters still don't know what Starmer stands for
According to a YouGov poll, 47% of voters are "unclear" about the Labour Party's stance, with only 26% believing it has a "clear sense of purpose." Starmer has faced criticism for not providing detailed tax commitments, but he has stated that he will not cut taxes without first achieving growth. When pressed on how he would grow the economy, Starmer mentioned working with the private sector to invest in the future.
Backtracking on green investment plans
Sir Keir Starmer has also backtracked on his plans to spend £28 billion annually on green investment, now calling it a "confidence ambition" that would be achieved by the second half of his first term. The move has drawn criticism from Tory MP Jacob Young, who accused Starmer of changing his stance with every statement.
Despite the criticism, Starmer maintains that he has laid out his policies and that those who claim otherwise have not been paying attention.
