Rishi Sunak Gives Clear Sign Manchester Leg of HS2 is for the Chop and Insists Hes Ready to Face Backlash

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister, has given a clear signal that the Manchester leg of the controversial HS2 high-speed rail project will be cancelled. In an interview with SE's Political Editor, Harry Cole, Sunak stated that he is prepared to face significant criticism for his decision.

Ready to Face Criticism

Sunak expressed his willingness to accept criticism, stating, "I've got under the bonnet. I've seen what works, what doesn't work, and what I want to do differently. That's the phase we're in." His comments indicate that he is committed to reassessing the project and making changes, despite opposition.

Focus on Drivers and Buses in the North

Brushing aside warnings from his predecessors and the business community, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to invest more in drivers and buses in the North. This strongly hints that the Manchester leg of HS2 will be scrapped.

Long-Term Vision

Addressing the backlash he has faced over his stance on HS2, Sunak asserted, "If you do this job, you've got to be fine with criticism, and I get plenty of it. But I'm doing what I think is right for the long term of the country. That's my guiding star."

Shift of Focus to Roads

Sunak suggested that it was time to prioritize road development over railway projects. He stated, "Like there's so much focus on this one thing, you forget that actually, how do most people get around? They use their cars. We should be focusing also on making sure that our roads are well maintained and that we're filling potholes."

Support for Bus Services

The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of buses as the most popular form of public transportation. He pledged to support bus services nationwide, particularly in rural areas. Sunak believes that investing in multiple forms of transportation is crucial to leveling up the country and meeting the needs of the public.

Connecting the North

Sunak acknowledged that the North requires more than just HS2. He stated, "What the North needs is connecting up all the towns and cities across the North – east to west – that's the thing that the North wants, and that's what we're doing." He emphasized the importance of investing in various transportation options for real change and progress.
