Young adults aged 16-24 in the UK will be given the opportunity to participate in summer work placements to steer them away from youth violence and crime. The £15 million program, initiated by Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, aims to help these teenagers start promising careers and break free from a life of crime.

Fighting Crime with Job Opportunities

The scheme will provide summer work placements for up to six weeks to approximately 2,600 vulnerable youths in areas with high crime rates. These individuals will be selected by town halls and pupil referral units, with a specific focus on teenagers who are at risk of not pursuing education, employment, or training after they turn 18.

Intensive Support and Mentoring

In addition to the job placements, teenagers in need of extra support will also receive intensive mentoring and one-to-one careers coaching. The aim is to provide them with the guidance and skills necessary to pursue a successful future and avoid falling into criminal activities.

£15 Million Backing from the Department for Media, Culture and Sport

The program is supported by £15 million in funding from the Department for Media, Culture and Sport. This financial backing will enable more young people to develop crucial skills, build their confidence, and increase their chances of finding employment later in life.

Culture Secretary's Commitment to Supporting Vulnerable Kids

Lucy Frazer, the Culture Secretary, emphasizes the importance of offering vulnerable kids a support network and positive activities to prevent them from joining gangs or engaging in drug dealing. She states, "I want every young person to have the chance to thrive, whether they are already on the right path to success or need a guiding hand."

Frazer adds, "The funding we are announcing will enable thousands more young people to develop vital skills and build their confidence, helping them be happier and healthier and unlock employment opportunities for them later in life."

Government's Commitment to Youth Development

This new program builds on the government's promise to provide all 11 to 18-year-olds in England with access to youth clubs, activities, and volunteering opportunities by 2025. Minister for Social Mobility Mims Davies MP highlights the benefits of the multi-million-pound program, stating, "Thousands of disadvantaged young people stand to benefit from this program, helping them take those vital steps into adulthood and unleash the benefits of work."
