Rishi Sunak Accuses Greek PM of "Grandstanding" Over Elgin Marbles

Rishi Sunak Accuses Greek PM of Grandstanding Over Elgin Marbles

Rishi Sunak Cancels Meeting with Greek PM

Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has accused Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of attempting to "grandstand" over the issue of the Elgin Marbles. During Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs), Sunak defended his decision to cancel a planned meeting with Mitsotakis at the last minute, stating that the purpose of the meeting was not to discuss substantive issues for the future, but rather to relitigate past issues.

Commitments Should Be Kept

Sunak emphasized the importance of keeping commitments, stating that specific assurances were made to the UK on the topic of the Elgin Marbles and that they were subsequently broken. He criticized Mitsotakis for attempting to grandstand and relitigate the issue, rather than engaging in meaningful discussions on topics such as illegal migration and security.

Sir Keir Starmer Criticizes Sunak

Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, seized the opportunity to criticize Sunak for walking away from talks with Mitsotakis. He accused Sunak of having "lost his marbles" and questioned why the Prime Minister would engage in such "small politics" instead of addressing important issues with a fellow NATO member and economic ally.

Migration Numbers and Political Jabs

Sir Keir also criticized Sunak for failing to bring migration numbers down, referencing recent statistics that revealed 740,000 people moved to Britain last year. In a jab at the ongoing Greek drama in Westminster, Sir Keir referred to Sunak's "reverse Midas touch" and suggested that the Home Secretary could help him complete the sentence. Additionally, Tory MP Sir John Hayes accused Labour of wanting to open the floodgates to more migrants, which he claimed would overwhelm struggling public services.
