Former Home Secretary Criticizes Immigration Policy
Suella Braverman, former Home Secretary, has launched a scathing attack on Rishi Sunak, claiming that his Safety of Rwanda bill "won't work" and "will not stop the boats". Braverman's comments come amidst a civil war within the Tory Party, sparked by the resignation of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick over the emergency legislation.
Jenrick's Resignation Letter
In his resignation letter, Jenrick expressed dissatisfaction with the draft Bill, stating that it "does not go far enough" and is a "triumph of hope over experience". Braverman echoed these sentiments, but denied that the Tories have a "death wish".
"We Need to Stop the Boats"
During an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Braverman emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of small boat crossings. She stated, "We need to stop the boats. And at the moment we are in a very perilous situation. The facts don't lie, and we need to deliver on a key promise. That's how we will win the next general election."
Doubts About the Bill's Effectiveness
While Braverman acknowledged that there are aspects of the new Bill that should be welcomed, she expressed doubts about its overall effectiveness. She highlighted the complexity of detaining and removing people, as well as the legal frameworks that come into play. Braverman concluded, "The reality is and the sorry truth is that it won't work and it will not stop the boats."
