The number of gay children being pushed to transition is at "almost epidemic" levels, according to Kemi Badenoch, the Equalities Minister. In a fiery debate in the Commons, Badenoch emphasized that "no child is born in the wrong body." Instead, she argued that these children are being exploited by individuals who do not understand their struggles.
Exploitation and Regret
Badenoch told MPs, "We are seeing, almost an epidemic of young gay children being told that they are trans and being put on a medical pathway for irreversible decisions, and they are regretting it." She firmly believes that no child should be put on a medical pathway towards irreversible gender transition.
Education Secretary's Stance
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan stated that the upcoming guidance for schools will not ban pupils from identifying as the opposite gender. However, there will be a "presumption against" children socially transitioning. Keegan emphasized that a complete ban, as suggested by some Tory MPs, would require a change in the equalities law.
Criticism of Trans Education in Schools
Conservative MP Nick Fletcher criticized the current trans situation in schools, stating that he cannot sleep at night knowing that the Education Secretary allows it. Fletcher also took issue with the material being taught in schools, citing an example that claims it is a "myth" that the world is "divided into men and women."
