Independent Probe Finds No Evidence of Political Discrimination
Furious Nigel Farage has criticized a review of Coutts bank account closures as a "work of fiction" after it found no evidence of political discrimination. The review was launched after Farage accused the posh bank of closing his account over his political views.
Law Firm Travers Smith Finds No Evidence of Discrimination
The review, conducted by law firm Travers Smith, examined 84 account closures over a two-year period and found no evidence of discrimination. This accounted for around ten percent of the 897 closures during that time. Earlier this year, Coutts owner NatWest admitted serious failings in its treatment of Farage.
Farage Dismisses Report as "Work of Fiction"
Nigel Farage, former leader of Ukip and a contestant on I'm A Celebrity, dismissed the Travers Smith report as a "work of fiction." He insists that the report does not reflect the true reasons why his account was closed, as revealed by the bank's disclosed documents. However, the report did acknowledge serious deficiencies in NatWest's account closure procedures.
Call for NatWest to Improve Procedures
Farage called on NatWest to take a closer look at their account closure procedures in light of the report's findings. The review suggested that Coutts could improve the way they communicate "exit decisions" to customers. Coutts chief Mohammad Syed acknowledged that there are lessons to be learned and apologized to customers.
