Lib Dem Leader Sir Ed Davey Criticized for Ignoring Sub-Postmasters in Horizon Scandal

Sir Ed Davey accused of snubbing postmasters affected by Horizon accounting scandal

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey is facing backlash after being accused of disregarding postmasters who were wrongly accused in the Horizon accounting scandal. A recently resurfaced letter reveals that Sir Ed, who was the Postal Affairs Minister at the time, declined a request for a meeting with the Justice for SubPostmasters Alliance. This group represented hundreds of postmasters who were prosecuted due to a faulty IT accounts system.

Letter from Sir Ed Davey suggests a meeting would not serve any purpose

In a letter dated May 2010, Sir Ed expressed his appreciation for the concerns raised by the group but stated that he did not believe a meeting would be beneficial. He later claimed that he was misled by Post Office executives and was prevented from meeting with campaigners seeking justice. The Horizon accounting scandal has gained renewed attention following the ITV drama "Mr Bates vs The Post Office."

Tory MP calls out Sir Ed Davey's leadership skills

Tory MP Paul Scully criticized Sir Ed, accusing him of failing his first test of leadership and attempting to whitewash his actions. Scully urged Sir Ed to acknowledge his role in the scandal rather than trying to downplay it. Records indicate that Sir Ed did eventually meet with campaigner Alan Bates, portrayed by Toby Jones, in October 2010.
