Laughing Gas to be Banned in the UK: Serious Users Could Face Jail Time

Crackdown on Anti-Social Behavior

The UK government is set to make laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, illegal within a matter of weeks. This move comes as part of a wider crackdown on anti-social behavior, with increased punishment for both users and dealers of the drug. Those caught in possession of the substance with the intent to get high could face up to two years behind bars.

Health Risks and Littering Concerns

The decision to make laughing gas a Class C substance is fueled by concerns over health risks and the impact on local communities. Nitrous oxide has been linked to serious health issues such as anaemia, nerve damage, and paralysis. Additionally, the littering of nitrous oxide canisters, often found in children's parks, has become a growing problem.

Consequences for Misusing Drugs

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, is sending a clear message that there are consequences for misusing drugs. The new legislation aims to deter young people from using nitrous oxide recreationally. Repeat offenders could face an unlimited fine, community service, or even a two-year prison sentence.

Legitimate Uses Still Allowed

It's important to note that nitrous oxide will still have legitimate uses, such as in kitchens and for pain relief in maternity wards. Individuals will not need a license to carry the substance, but they will be required to prove that they do not intend to use it for psychoactive effects.

Positive Move for Communities

The banning of nitrous oxide is seen as a positive step towards tackling anti-social behavior and creating safer communities. Neighbourhood Watch CEO John Hayward-Cripps believes that the new legislation will make local communities a better place to live.
