Labour Shadow Minister Faces Backlash for Association with Palestinian Solidarity Campaign

Afzal Khan, a prominent member of the Labour party, has stirred controversy after being photographed with a supporter of the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign at the recent Labour party conference. The group publicly thanked Khan for engaging with them.

Call for Action

This incident follows a demand for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to suspend Labour MP Apsana Begum from the Parliamentary party, after she too was seen posing with the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign. The group had organized a protest outside the Israeli embassy shortly after a devastating attack by Hamas resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.

Tory Party Criticism

Greg Hands, Chair of the Conservative party, criticized Sir Keir for failing to take action against Labour members who did not unreservedly condemn the terror attack on Israel, as well as those who employed the offensive term 'apartheid' in reference to Israel.

Intra-Party Dispute

Labour figures became embroiled in a heated disagreement when shadow Minister Wayne David expressed his belief that UK aid to Palestine should be increased, despite the recent violent attacks in Israel. David argued that British support for the Palestinian people should not be equated with support for Hamas.

Differing Views on Aid

However, shadow International Aid Minister Lisa Nandy disagreed with David's stance, stating that the UK should review its aid following the deadly attacks. Nandy emphasized the need to ensure British money does not inadvertently contribute to acts of terrorism. She pledged to bring up the matter with Ministers.
