Labour MP Dawn Butler threatens to call police on Mumsnet amid backlash over Brianna Gheys murder

Labour MP Dawn Butler has threatened to report popular parenting website Mumsnet to the police after facing criticism for her comments on the murder of trans teenager Brianna Ghey. Butler had accused the government of fostering anti-trans "hate" following the conviction of two teens for Ghey's killing. However, her post on social media was met with backlash from Mumsnet users, who accused her of "weaponising" the tragedy.

Backlash from Mumsnet users

After receiving criticism from Mumsnet users, Dawn Butler took to social media once again, stating, "I wondered where these nasty, vicious, inhumane people were coming from. Time for me to unfollow and report Mumsnet to @metpoliceuk." This further ignited anger among users, with one person pointing out that criticizing politicians for their public statements is not illegal. Another user described the idea of an MP reporting a website to the police as "bonkers."

No hate crime ruling

It is important to note that the police have ruled that Brianna Ghey's murder in Warrington was not a hate crime. This information challenges Butler's assertion that the government's actions have contributed to anti-trans sentiment. However, the MP and the Metropolitan Police have been asked to provide comments regarding the situation.

Mumsnet's response

Mumsnet founder and CEO, Justine Roberts, responded to Dawn Butler's criticism by highlighting the irony of Butler's post being made on X (formerly Twitter), a platform known for hosting comments that would not be tolerated on Mumsnet. Roberts also mentioned the light touch moderation on X compared to Mumsnet. She described this double standard as something they often encounter.

It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, and whether or not Butler will follow through with her threat to involve the police.
