Former Civil Servant Takes on New Role
Jade Glenister, a former top civil servant who was responsible for inspecting immigration detention centres, has joined the human rights charity Detention Action. During her five-year tenure with HM Inspectorate of Prisons, Glenister wrote a book on the best practices for detaining illegal immigrants.
Opposing the Government's Policy
As the deputy director of Detention Action, Glenister is now actively opposing the Government's Rwanda policy. This move has raised concerns among some politicians who question the alignment of civil servants' actions with their responsibilities while in office.
Concerns from Tory MP
Tory MP Marco Longhi expressed his concern over civil servants transitioning into roles that oppose government policies. He raised questions about how this affects the confidence in a service that is meant to be impartial and how politicians can deliver on their elected mandates.
Criticism from Migration Watch UK
Alp Mehmet, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, criticized Glenister's new role, stating that her experience in drafting rules for detaining and removing illegal immigrants may give her insight into potential loopholes in the government's immigration policies.
