The Name Behind Sirius

Have you ever wondered why the brightest star is called Sirius? The name derives from a Greek word meaning "sparkling" or "scorching." In ancient cultures, Sirius was associated with dogs, as it gives the illusion of following you around. It's even a part of the Canis Major constellation, also known as the Big Dog. So, it's no wonder it's referred to as the Dog Star.

Spotting Sirius

Spotting Sirius in the sky is easier than you might think. While it can be seen from anywhere on Earth, it's best observed in the winter. To find it, simply locate Orion's belt and follow the leftward line of three stars. For a nifty trick, hold your hand at arm's length, extend your thumb, and the tip of your little finger. The distance between the two should be 20 degrees, which points you in the direction of Sirius.
