LG's Final Curtain Call: Phone Updates Vanish Forever This Summer (and why my drawer full of old gadgets is causing me panic)

I just had a mini heart attack looking through my tech junk drawer. Buried under three tangled chargers and a pair of earbuds I thought I lost in 2019 was my old LG phone. Remember those? The company that used to make those weirdly innovative phones before disappearing into the tech graveyard?

Well, turns out I'm not the only one who should be digging through their drawers right about now.

The 15-Year Smartphone Experiment That Crashed and Burned

LG, teh South Korean tech giant that once dreamed of smartphone domination, is officially pulling the plug on its mobile division's life support system. After 15 years of trying (and ultimately failing) to compete with Samsung and the Chinese upstarts, they're shutting down their update servers for good on June 30th.

That gives owners of LG phones exactly two months to download any final updates before everything goes dark. Forever.

I remember when LG was actually cool. My buddy Mark had that weird Wing 5G phone with the swiveling screen that made everyone at happy hour go "wait, let me see that again." Now it's just another tech footnote.

Wait... Why Should Anyone Care?

Fair question. LG announced back in 2021 they were quitting the smartphone business because, well, nobody was buying their phones. Samsung was crushing them on one side, and brands like Oppo and Xiaomi were eating their lunch on the other.

But they promised three years of updates for existing devices. Those three years? They're about to expire.

After June 30th, if you've got an LG phone, you're basically holding a slowly dying device. No security patches. No OS updates. Nothing.

The "Oh Crap" Moment For LG Loyalists

Look, I'm not saying you need to panic. But also... maybe panic a little?

If you're still rocking an LG smartphone (or have one stashed away like I apparently do), you need to power that sucker up and run any available updates ASAP. After June 30th, those update servers go dark.

And it's not just about missing the latest Android features. Without security updates, your phone becomes increasingly vulnerable to all sorts of digital nasties. Not ideal.

The Farewell Note That Feels Like an Awkward Breakup Text

LG's goodbye message reads like something written by someone who's already mentally checked out of the relationship:

"We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude towards our customers who have loved and supported LG Electronics mobile products," they said, probably while packing up their desk plants.

"After the termination date, you will no longer be able to use the software upgrade services. If you wish to use the services, we strongly recommend upgrading your software before June 30, 2025."

Translation: We're done. Update now or forever hold your peace.

They also mentioned you won't be able to download default apps if you factory reset your phone after the deadline. So... don't do that.

Pour One Out for LG Bridge

Remember LG Bridge? That PC software that helped you update your phone and manage content?

No? Just me? Well, it's dying too.

I spent $75 on a replacement battery for my old LG V20 last year thinking I'd use it as a backup phone. God. What a waste of money that turned out to be.

The Real Question Nobody's Asking

How many people are actually still using LG phones in 2025? I ran into my cousin at a wedding last month and noticed he was still using what looked like an ancient LG G6. When I asked him why, he just shrugged and said, "It still works."

Not for long, buddy.

I wonder if there's going to be some kind of digital vigil on June 30th. A moment of silence for all those swivel screens and leather-backed phones that dared to be different in a sea of identical glass slabs.

Pour one out for innovation that didn't quite make it.

And seriously, check your junk drawers. You might have an LG phone that needs one last update before it's too late.
