Gym memberships? Nah. Virgin Media just dropped a surprise freebie that'll save you sweating cash this summer

Alright, so I was doom-scrolling through my emails yesterday (as one does at 11pm when sleep is apparently optional) when I spotted something from Virgin Media that actually made me sit up. And trust me, after 7 years as a customer, that doesn't happen often.

They're giving away something that isn't just another random movie channel nobody watches.

Hear the Summary

Wait... they're actually giving us something useful?

Virgin Media is handing out free access to a workout app called Fit at Home directly through their TV boxes. The kicker? This thing normally costs a tenner every month, which adds up to a £30 saving over the three months they're offering it.

I mean, I've spent the last two summers promising myself I'd "get in shape" while simultaneously perfecting the art of couch-potato-ing. Maybe third time's teh charm?

What's actually included (and why my wallet is thanking me)

Back in 2019, I dropped nearly £400 on a gym membership I used exactly 4 times. FOUR. That's £100 per guilty visit.

This app thing has all sorts of classes - Pilates, workouts with dumbbells, meditation sessions for when your brain feels like scrambled eggs... all that jazz. The best part? You don't need to leave your living room or deal with that one person who never wipes down the equipment. You know the one.

There's even dance classes my kids might actually enjoy. Though last time I suggested family exercise time, my 9-year-old looked at me like I'd suggested eating broccoli ice cream.

The suits are pretty chuffed about it

Some bigwig called David Bouchier (Chief TV and Entertainment Officer - fancy title, right?) said: "It is our mission to provide customers the best possible value from their Virgin TV package, so we are thrilled to be offering three months access to Fit at Home at no extra cost."

Translation: "We know you're all comparing our prices to streaming services, so here's something to make you feel better about your monthly bill."

His response continued with something about "professionally led workouts" and "physiotherapy programs" without "shelling out on a gym membership."

Listen. I appreciate the sentiment, Dave.

How to actually get this thing before it vanishes

You've got until June 30th to grab this freebie. After that? Back to paying £10 monthly if you get hooked on those endorphins.

Getting it set up is pretty straightforward. Find the Apps section on your Virgin TV 360 or Stream box, look for Fit at Home, and scan a QR code with your phone. Even my technologically-challenged mother-in-law could probably manage this one.

Is it worth the effort?

I dunno, maybe? I mean, it's free. And God knows I've spent money on dumber things (like that juicer that's been collecting dust since 2021).

At the very least, it's a way to justify all those hours spent in front of the TV. "I'm not binge-watching, I'm preparing for my workout!"

Might give it a go this weekend. Or not. We'll see how ambitious I'm feeling after my third coffee.
