Study Reveals Older Adults' Confusion Over Digital Terms
A recent study of over-65s has found that one in six admits to being completely 'baffled' by digital terms. Common jargon such as hyperlinks, phishing, and The Cloud leave them scratching their heads. In addition, terms like processor, malware, and USB-C also made the top 20 list of confusing terms, along with cookies, IP addresses, and smishing.
BT Group and Susie Dent Create Digital Dictionary
BT Group has partnered with AbilityNet and lexicographer Susie Dent to create a Digital Dictionary consisting of the 21 most commonly misunderstood words used on the internet. The aim is to help older people have a better understanding of online jargon.
Challenges and Frustrations for Older People
The survey also revealed that over-65s spend just five and a half hours a week online, with 78% feeling left behind by their lack of knowledge. More than half (54%) wish they were more knowledgeable about computing. However, 17% of these feel a lack of motivation and others say there is simply too much to learn or they need someone to show them what to do. Some older adults worry that others will see them as a burden if they ask for help in understanding different areas of technology.
Positive and Negative Aspects of the Online World
While many appreciate the easy access to information (31%), convenience (17%), and the ability to keep in touch with friends and family (15%), there are negative aspects of the online world as well. Scams (34%) and privacy concerns (14%) were the least-liked things about being online. Additionally, 10% of respondents stress that not every piece of information they see online is credible.

Towards a More Inclusive Society
BT Group hopes that the Digital Dictionary and other online guides will give older adults the confidence to start exploring the internet and provide them with the necessary training and support to live life to the fullest in the digital age. Victoria Johnson, spokesperson for BT Group, believes that it's important to create a more inclusive society by helping older adults make the most of life in the digital world.
