Sir Jim Ratcliffe questions Manchester Uniteds signing of Casemiro, prefers Declan Rice

Sir Jim Ratcliffe raises concerns

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is close to finalizing a £1.25 billion deal for a 25% stake in Manchester United, has questioned the club's decision to sign Casemiro. During a tour of Carrington in March, Ratcliffe expressed his dissatisfaction with the Brazilian midfielder's fit in Erik ten Hag's side.

United's shift in transfer plans

When Manchester United chiefs were in search of a midfielder last year, they initially pursued Frenkie de Jong. However, after disappointing performances against Brighton and Brentford, the club turned their attention to Casemiro. Despite resistance from within the recruitment team, United ultimately signed the 31-year-old for £60 million in August 2022.

Preference for Declan Rice

While Casemiro joined United, some club staff members believed that Declan Rice would have been a better transfer. Rice, who eventually signed for Arsenal for £105 million, was seen as a better fit for the club's compliance with Financial Fair Play rules. It was estimated that Rice would have cost United a record-breaking £120 million, but the fee could have been spread out over a longer contract.

Age and potential resale value

One factor that may have influenced the preference for Rice over Casemiro is the age difference between the two players. At 23 years old, Rice has the potential for resale value, while Casemiro is nearing the end of his career. Additionally, Rice's weekly wage at Arsenal is £250,000, compared to Casemiro's £350,000.

United's transfer strategy

Manchester United's recent transfer strategy has involved signing experienced European stars with age concerns, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Christian Eriksen. They have also targeted young talents from abroad, signing players like Rasmus Hojlund and Antony for hefty fees. Casemiro's potential departure from Old Trafford is reportedly being considered, with an offer from Saudi Arabia on the table.

Limited playing time for Casemiro

Since joining Manchester United, Casemiro has made just 12 appearances this season due to various injury issues.
