Shock at Ascot as Shishkin Refuses to Race in Nirvana Spa 1965 Chase

Shocking scenes unfolded at Ascot on Saturday as Shishkin, one of the UK's top horses, dramatically refused to compete in the Nirvana Spa 1965 Chase.

Pre-Race Favourite

Shishkin, a 13-time winner and the odds-on favorite, appeared uneasy just moments before the race began.

A Surprising Turn of Events

As the other three runners took off, it became clear that Shishkin had no intention of starting the race.

Shishkin lined up with the other runners but refused to run when the race began.

A Quirky Character

Mick Fitzgerald, ITV Racing pundit and former stable jockey to Shishkin's trainer Nicky Henderson, revealed that the horse has displayed similar behavior in the past.

According to Fitzgerald, Shishkin has been "a bit funny" at the start of races before.

Rivalry with Pic D'Orhy

The pre-race buzz centered around the rivalry between Shishkin and Pic D'Orhy, following their clash at the Ascot Chase in February.

Shishkin emerged victorious in that race, winning by an impressive 16 lengths.

Pic D'Orhy Capitalizes on Shishkin's Absence

In Shishkin's absence, Pic D'Orhy, ridden by Harry Cobden, seized the opportunity and went on to win the race, defeating Straw Fan Jack.

Cobden revealed that as a jockey, it's easier when the favorite doesn't compete, and he had noticed Shishkin's reluctance to start the race.

He also mentioned that Pic D'Orhy didn't perform at his best, but still managed to secure the victory.
