Liverpool has been home to numerous star players over the years, but not all of them found success while wearing the iconic red jersey. Many players who left Liverpool went on to achieve great things elsewhere. Let's take a look at seven players who initially struggled at Liverpool but later became household names.
CONOR COADY
Conor Coady, now 30 years old, joined Liverpool's youth academy at the age of 12. Despite his potential, Coady only made two appearances for the Reds, with just one in the Premier League. After a successful loan spell at Sheffield United, he was sold to Huddersfield. Coady later joined Wolves, where he helped the team gain promotion to the Premier League. He made his England debut in 2020 and has since become an integral part of the national team.
PETER GULACSI
Peter Gulacsi, the Hungarian goalkeeper, spent six years at Liverpool. However, he never played a competitive game for the Reds and was often a backup option. Gulacsi had loan spells at various clubs before moving to RB Salzburg, where he impressed enough to earn a move to RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. He has been Leipzig's number one goalkeeper for eight years and has been instrumental in their success.
RAHEEM STERLING
Raheem Sterling joined Liverpool at the age of 15 and broke into the first team at just 17. While he showed promise during his time at Liverpool, it was after his move to Manchester City that he truly flourished. Sterling has won numerous titles with City, including three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and four League Cups. He has also been a key player for the England national team in recent years.

ALVARO ARBELOA
Alvaro Arbeloa spent only two seasons at Liverpool, but he made a significant impact during his time there. After leaving Liverpool, Arbeloa joined Real Madrid, where he played 233 games and won multiple titles, including LaLiga and the Champions League. He was also a regular for the Spanish national team, winning three consecutive tournaments.
IAGO ASPAS
Iago Aspas is often remembered as one of Liverpool's biggest flop signings. He struggled to make an impact during his time at the club, scoring zero goals in the Premier League. However, after leaving Liverpool, Aspas found success at Sevilla and Celta Vigo, scoring 146 goals in 304 games. He also earned his first caps for the Spanish national team and was part of the squad for the 2018 World Cup.
SUSO
Suso joined Liverpool's youth academy in 2010 and made his way to the first team within a few years. However, he was eventually sold to AC Milan after a loan spell at Almeria. Since then, Suso has become a regular at Milan and has also represented the Spanish national team. He helped Sevilla win the Europa League in 2020.
DANNY INGS
Danny Ings joined Liverpool with high expectations in 2015, but injuries limited his playing time at the club. He eventually moved to Southampton, where he had a prolific goal-scoring record. Ings then joined Aston Villa before making a £15m switch to West Ham in 2022. Despite his struggles at Liverpool, Ings has proven himself as a top striker in the Premier League.
