Mark Lawrenson criticizes James' red card and calls for captain change
Former BBC footballer Mark Lawrenson has voiced his opinion on Reece James' suitability as captain for Chelsea following his red card in the match against Newcastle. James was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Anthony Gordon, leading Lawrenson to accuse him of overthinking and suggest that Mauricio Pochettino should pass the armband to someone else. Lawrenson believes that Thiago Silva, who rarely gets injured and has a wealth of experience, would have been a better choice for captain. He suggests that James' overthinking may have led to his "stupid decision" and subsequent red card.
Injuries disrupt James' campaign as captain
Reece James was named captain of Chelsea in the summer following Cesar Azpilicueta's departure. However, his campaign has been marred by injuries, limiting him to just six league appearances. A hamstring injury kept him out of six matches before his return in October. Despite starting Chelsea's last three matches, James will be absent this weekend as he serves a one-match ban for his red card. Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from their recent loss as they face Brighton at home on Sunday.
