Raphael Varane Could Leave Man Utd on Free Transfer After Contract Error

French Defender's Future in Doubt

Reports suggest that Raphael Varane, the French defender signed by Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2021 for £42 million, could leave the club on a free transfer next summer due to a contract blunder.

Contract Confusion

Despite the initial announcement of a four-year contract, it has been revealed that Varane's current deal actually expires in June. According to The Athletic, the 30-year-old signed a three-year contract with the option of a one-year extension upon his arrival at Old Trafford.

Implications for Varane

With his contract set to run down, Varane could potentially enter talks with foreign clubs as early as January for a potential transfer at the end of the 2023-24 season. The defender has seen a decrease in playing time at Man Utd, making only 13 appearances across all competitions this season.

Other Players on the Move

In addition to Varane, Anthony Martial is also set to leave Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of the season. While Man Utd has the option to extend his contract until 2025, they have no plans to trigger it. Furthermore, Casemiro and Jadon Sancho are expected to be put up for sale.
