Patrick Mullins to Ride for Rival Trainer Gordon Elliott in Shock Defection

Betrayal in the Saddle

In a surprising turn of events, jockey Patrick Mullins, son of renowned trainer Willie Mullins, is set to ride for rival trainer Gordon Elliott. This unexpected move has left many in the racing world stunned.

A Good Reason Behind the Decision

While some may view this as a betrayal, there is actually a very good reason for Patrick Mullins' defection. Typically, he can be found riding one of his father's highly promising horses in a bumper. However, at the upcoming Navan race on Saturday, Mullins will be aboard the Elliott-trained My Trump Card in the 2m flat race.

A Unique Opportunity

Although Willie Mullins does not have a runner in the race, Patrick Mullins will still be able to ride thanks to a unique circumstance. He bred the five-year-old horse himself, as it is owned by Bective Stud. This opportunity to ride his own creation is too enticing to pass up.

A Maiden with Potential

My Trump Card is still considered a maiden after two races, but there is plenty of potential. In November of last year, the horse finished fourth behind the recent chase winner Grangeclare West on debut. After a year off, My Trump Card returned to the track with a head second-place finish to Springt De La Mare at Navan last month.

A Valuable Purchase

My Trump Card was purchased for an impressive £200,000 at the Goffs Landrover Sale in June 2021. This sizeable investment reflects the belief in the horse's abilities and potential success.

Patrick Mullins' Recent Success

Patrick Mullins has been performing exceptionally well lately, boasting a 50 per cent strike rate in the past two weeks with four wins out of eight rides. While he primarily rides for his father, who is a highly successful trainer, Mullins is not one to shy away from new opportunities.

Looking Ahead

Willie Mullins will undoubtedly be targeting significant victories at upcoming races such as Leopardstown at Christmas and the Dublin Racing Festival in February. One of his star horses, El Fabiolo, will make his seasonal return this Sunday. The hopeful Champion Chase favorite has been entered in the Grade 2 Hilly Way Chase at Cork on Sunday.
