Oscar Pistorius could be granted parole today in fresh hearing

Convicted killer could be released after serving over half of his sentence

Oscar Pistorius, the disgraced former Paralympian, is making another bid for freedom today as he seeks parole after serving almost seven years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013. Pistorius, who has always claimed the shooting was a mistake, could be granted release if his bid is approved.

Parole hearing held today after previous bid denied

The parole hearing is taking place today at Atteridgeville prison, just outside Pretoria, where Pistorius lived when he killed Steenkamp. If his bid for freedom is approved, a decision on his release date could come quickly. Steenkamp's mother, June, is reportedly not opposing parole and will not attend the hearing.

Brother of victim pleads for Pistorius to serve full sentence

Adam Steenkamp, the brother of Reeva, has made a plea for Pistorius to remain behind bars and serve his full sentence. He believes the original sentence was lenient and wants justice for his sister. Judges in South Africa previously admitted their mistake in failing to backdate Pistorius' jail term, making him eligible for parole earlier than expected.

Pistorius to be kept under close police protection if released

Even if Pistorius is granted parole, he will be under close police protection due to fears of revenge attacks. The ex-athlete was initially sentenced to six years for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, but the term was doubled after the state appealed, deeming it too lenient.

Family still seeking truth and justice for Reeva Steenkamp

Reeva's family continues to seek the truth about what happened to her and wants Pistorius to serve his full term. Her brother, Adam, believes that Pistorius is unrepentant and does not take responsibility for the murder. He paid tribute to his sister and expressed the devastating consequences her death has had on the family.
