Mesut Ozil's Dad Questions His Son's Retirement from Football

Mesut Ozils Dad Questions His Sons Retirement from Football

Mustafa Ozil Regrets Early Retirement

Mustafa Ozil, the father of former professional footballer Mesut Ozil, has expressed his doubts about his son's decision to retire from international football in 2018. Mesut, now 35, cited allegations of racism and disrespect as the reasons behind his retirement. However, Mustafa believes that his son should not have retired so soon and regrets the way things ended between Mesut and the German national team.

Regret and Disappointment

In an interview with Bild, Mustafa Ozil revealed his sadness and disappointment over the way his son's career came to an end. He stated, "If I had a magic wand, I would turn the wheel back. Mesut's career couldn't end like this. I still don't accept it to this day. I am sad and disappointed. It hurts me."

Blaming Influences

Mustafa went on to suggest that Mesut was influenced by his environment and may have been taken advantage of before making the decision to retire. He expressed his belief that Germany, the country where Mesut was born, would not have denied him a chance and that statements of xenophobia did not come from his son. Mustafa added, "I think he is being used to a certain extent."

Advice and Criticism

Mustafa also criticized Mesut's agent, Erkut Sogut, for allowing his resignation from international duty. He questioned how such a decision was permitted, considering Mesut's achievements and awards as a player. Mustafa emphasized the need for a different approach as an advisor, taking into account the player's responsibilities.

Retirement and Recent Years

After retiring from international duty, Mesut Ozil continued to play for Arsenal for two-and-a-half more years before his contract was terminated in January 2021. He then joined Fenerbahce before signing with Istanbul Basaksehir. In March of this year, he ultimately decided to retire from football altogether, citing a series of recent injuries as the main reason.
