Meet Mitchell van der Gaag: The Man Utd Assistant Manager Taking Charge Against Everton

Who is Mitchell van der Gaag?

As Manchester United gear up for their crucial match against Everton, they have a new face in the dugout. Erik ten Hag, the usual assistant manager, has been banned, leaving Mitchell van der Gaag to take charge. But who exactly is Mitchell van der Gaag?

Van der Gaag joined United last summer, following Ten Hag from Ajax to Old Trafford. Before joining the coaching staff, he had a successful managerial career, leading clubs in Portugal, Cyprus, and the Netherlands. He also has playing experience, spending two years with Motherwell and representing the Dutch youth national team. However, his career has not been without its challenges. In 2013, he suffered a heart scare while managing in Portugal, nearly dying in the dugout during a match.

Why is Erik ten Hag banned today?

Erik ten Hag, the usual assistant manager for Manchester United, will not be on the touchline during the Everton match. He has been banned after receiving three yellow cards in the Premier League this season. One of these bookings came during the 1-0 victory over Luton, where he complained about the award of a throw-in. The 2019 changes to disciplinary rules by the FA now include yellow cards for coaching staff, alongside red cards.

Van der Gaag will have the support of Eric Ramsay, Steve McClaren, and Benni McCarthy in the dugout at Goodison Park for what promises to be a fiery encounter.
