The Comparison
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has rejected claims that Cole Palmer is the new Juan Mata and instead likened him to Manchester United flop Angel Di Maria. Pochettino made the comparison during a pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea's match against Manchester City, Palmer's former club.
The Di Maria Connection
When asked if Palmer reminded him of Mata, Pochettino responded, "Juan Mata? No, he is more Di Maria! You know, the body and the way he moves." Pochettino previously worked with Di Maria at Paris Saint-Germain, where the Argentine winger had a successful stint after struggling at Manchester United.
Palmer's Journey
Cole Palmer made the switch from Manchester City to Chelsea in the summer after a season in which he was limited to just seven starts. Since joining Chelsea, the 21-year-old has impressed with three goals and four assists for his new club, including a standout performance in their 4-1 win over Tottenham.
Palmer's Confidence
Reflecting on his performances, Palmer said, "It has surprised me a bit but I know my own ability. And I knew that if I hit the ground running I'd have a chance and obviously make an impact. That's why I went there."
