Jamie Carragher Predicts Battle Between Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon for England Euro 2024 Spot

Jamie Carragher Predicts Battle Between Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon for England Euro 2024 Spot

Impressive Performances

Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the debate over who will make the England Euro 2024 squad, saying it's a "toss-up" between Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon. Palmer, who has been in fine form for Chelsea, recently made his debut for the Three Lions during the international break. However, Newcastle's Gordon has also been impressive this season, particularly in the Magpies' 4-1 victory against Chelsea on Saturday where he scored a goal and provided an assist.

Head-to-Head Battle

Carragher believes that Palmer and Gordon will go head-to-head for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the Euros in Germany next summer. Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher mentioned other wingers and attacking midfielders who are likely to make the cut, including Saka, Foden, Rashford, Grealish, and Maddison. He noted that Palmer has been outstanding since joining Chelsea but also acknowledged Gordon's excellent performances for the national team during the Under-21 tournament in the summer.

Tough Competition

Carragher's analysis suggests that Palmer may have surpassed Gordon in terms of earning a spot in the England squad, despite Gordon's previous contributions to the national team. However, Carragher believes that if Gordon continues his current form, it could still be a close competition between the two players.

Formation Considerations

Gareth Southgate's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation may impact the chances of other wingers like Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, and Raheem Sterling. This could potentially increase the chances for both Palmer and Gordon to secure a place in the squad.

Champions League Advantage

It's worth noting that Gordon is the only one among the winger contenders who is currently playing in the Champions League. His upcoming match against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital will provide him with an opportunity to further impress and solidify his chances of making the national squad for the Euros.
