How Luke Littler's Dad Persuaded Him to Ditch Football for Darts at Age 9

How Luke Littlers Dad Persuaded Him to Ditch Football for Darts at Age 9

From Footballer Aspirations to Darts Stardom

Luke Littler, the 16-year-old sensation who recently reached the World Darts Championship final, admits that he once had dreams of becoming a professional footballer. However, it was his dad who convinced him to make the switch to darts at the tender age of nine.

A Father's Intuition

Littler's dad, Anthony Buckley, recognized his son's potential in darts and had a frank discussion with him about focusing on the sport. Despite Littler's love for football, his dad believed that his chances of making it as a professional were higher in darts. And it turns out he was right.

Proving His Dad Right

Littler's decision to pursue darts has paid off in a big way. He made an impressive senior debut, reaching the WDC final and defeating well-known players like Rob Cross and Raymond van Barneveld along the way. Although he fell short in the final, losing to Luke Humphries, Littler has already been selected to compete in the upcoming Premier League tour alongside darts legend Michael van Gerwen and other top players.

Darts Over Football

While Littler initially had aspirations of following in the footsteps of his football idols, his dad's advice led him down a different path. Reflecting on his decision, Littler said, "I didn't realize I was going to be this good... I love[d] football, but my dad said, 'hang your boots up, let's focus on darts.'" And now, six years later, Littler finds himself on the biggest stage in darts.

A Father's Sacrifice

Anthony Buckley made it a priority to support his son's darts career from a young age. He encouraged Littler to participate in every online competition available, even if it meant sacrificing his own day off and waking up early on weekends. Buckley's dedication and belief in his son's talent have undoubtedly played a significant role in Littler's success.

So, while Littler may have once dreamed of a career in football, it's clear that his decision to embrace darts has led him to a realm of success and opportunities he may not have otherwise encountered. And it's all thanks to the guidance and intuition of his dad.
