Rob Sherman: From Lifeguard to Football Manager
Rob Sherman, a former champion lifeguard on the Welsh west coast, has taken on a new challenge as the national football team manager of Fiji. Despite being 10,000 miles from home, Sherman is determined to lead the 170th-ranked nation to their first World Cup.
Chances Boosted for Fiji
Fiji, who have never played at a World Cup, have received a boost with Oceania now getting 1.5 qualifying spots. This raises the ambition for all nations, including Fiji, to secure a spot at the United States, Canada, and Mexico 2026 tournament. Sherman believes Fiji can spring a surprise and qualify for the World Cup.
Improving Fitness Levels
One of Sherman's key priorities is to improve the fitness levels of the Fiji team. After a disappointing 9-0 loss to New Zealand in September's Olympic qualifying final, Sherman and his backroom team, including former Premier League goalkeeper Les Cleevely, are determined to raise the standard and ensure the team is in peak physical condition.
Strict Fijian Government Laws
Strict Fijian government laws regarding passports prevent Sherman from selecting some players. According to Fijian legislation, anyone applying for a Fijian passport for the first time after turning 18 needs to spend five years living in the country. This rule excludes talented players with Fijian grandparents who would otherwise be eligible under Fifa legislation.

From Lifeguard to Ironman
Sherman, known for his ridiculous fitness levels, completed an Ironman in 2000 and ran the New York Marathon the year before. Born and bred in Aberystwyth, Sherman represented Wales in three different sports and played for the Wales Under-18s in football. Despite his football career spiraling downwards due to bad timing, Sherman has found success as a coach and dreams of leading Fiji to the World Cup.
