Former Liverpool and Leeds Star Dominic Matteo Opens Up About Brain Tumour Diagnosis While Playing

Former Liverpool and Leeds United midfielder Dominic Matteo has bravely shared his experience with a brain tumour diagnosis that almost cost him his life. In 2019, Matteo was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumour after suffering from persistent headaches. The 49-year-old underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumour after experiencing a seizure. Matteo has since revealed that doctors informed him the tumour had already formed while he was still playing.

A Shocking Diagnosis During Playing Days

Matteo was immediately rushed to Leeds General Infirmary after his diagnosis, but his condition worsened. He underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumour, which was putting immense pressure on his brain. Matteo expressed disbelief upon learning that he had played his entire career with a brain tumour. Despite the seriousness of his situation, Matteo has managed to find humor and joked that he might have been a better player if he had known about the tumour.

A Supportive Family

Throughout his difficult journey, Matteo's wife Jessica has been his rock. She revealed that the ordeal began with headaches and blurred vision, and within 48 hours, Matteo lost his sight and experienced a massive seizure. Jessica recalled waiting anxiously for the phone call from the surgeon after the 10-hour surgery and feeling overwhelmed with relief when she learned that 90-95% of the tumour had been removed. Matteo's recovery owes much to the support and care provided by his wife.

An Ongoing Recovery

Matteo's recovery has been a long and challenging process. He has had to relearn basic skills such as reading and writing. The former Scotland international admits that the whole experience still feels surreal to him. Matteo reflects on the photos of his surgery and acknowledges the magnitude of what he has been through.
