Football Lawmakers Considering Rugby-Style Changes

Football Lawmakers Considering Rugby-Style Changes

New Rules Inspired by Rugby

Football lawmakers are reportedly considering two huge rugby-style changes after successful trials at lower levels of the game. Premier League stars are still adjusting to new rules regarding dissent this season, with referees no longer tolerating berating from players. Now, the International FA Board (Ifab) is considering tightening the rules even further, potentially only allowing captains to speak to officials, bringing football in line with rugby.

Sin-Bins Could Be Introduced

The Times reports that sin-bins could also be added to football as a form of punishment for dissent. Under this system, players would be sent out of matches for 10 minutes. Trials for sin-bins could be conducted in professional leagues after successful testing at grassroots and junior levels over the past four years.

Positive Feedback from Ifab

Lukas Brud, Chief Executive of Ifab, stated that sin-bins for dissent have been successful in grassroots football and could also be tested at higher levels. He explained that players may not be as concerned about receiving a yellow card for inappropriate behavior, but knowing it would result in a tenth of the match off the pitch could make a significant difference. Brud also mentioned that there is interest from various stakeholders in the idea of only allowing the captain to approach the referee in a fair manner. This approach has been effective in other sports like rugby and basketball.
