Five Potential Replacements for Ian Wright on Match of the Day

Five Potential Replacements for Ian Wright on Match of the Day

Didier Drogba: A Major Coup for the BBC

Talk about replacing one big-name striker for another... Didier Drogba could be a major coup for the BBC. The two-time Golden Boot winner and former Chelsea player has already worked as a pundit for the BBC during the Qatar World Cup 2022. With his expertise and working relationship with the team, Drogba would be a strong candidate to join the Match of the Day pundits.

Rio Ferdinand: A Top Pundit in High Demand

Rio Ferdinand is not only a former England and Manchester United player but also an experienced pundit. He worked for the BBC during major international tournaments, including the World Cup. Currently, Ferdinand is TNT Sports' main man for their Saturday lunchtime kick-offs and Champions League coverage. While a deal would need to be struck, the possibility of Ferdinand joining the Match of the Day team is not out of the question.

Shaun Wright-Phillips: Keeping It in the Family

Why not keep it in the family? Shaun Wright-Phillips, son of Ian Wright, made his debut on Match of the Day alongside his dad in May. The former Chelsea and Manchester City winger could be a suitable replacement for his father, bringing his own banter and unique perspective to the show. Shaun retired in 2019, making him available for a potential role as a pundit.

Fara Williams: A Seamless Transition from the Pitch to the Studio

Fara Williams, an England international with 172 caps, has made a seamless transition from the pitch to the studio. Since retiring in 2021, Williams has demonstrated her ability to analyze the game during the Women's World Cup and is currently part of the BBC's Women's Super League (WSL) team. Her tremendous knowledge and experience make her a strong contender for a Match of the Day punditry role.

Jermain Defoe: From the Premier League to the Studio

Jermain Defoe, a former Premier League striker with 162 goals to his name, has already made a name for himself in the media. After retiring in 2022, Defoe has worked as an academy coach with Tottenham Hotspur's Under-18s and has done punditry work for Channel 4 and Premier League Productions. With his experience both on and off the pitch, Defoe could bring a fresh perspective to Match of the Day.
