Fans Slam National League as Southend United Names Only One Substitute

Lack of Numbers

Fans are expressing their disappointment and frustration with the National League after Southend United named only one substitute on their bench for their match against Bromley. The team was short of numbers for the game at Roots Hall, resulting in a match-day squad of just 12 players.

One Sub on the Bench

Midfielder Mauro Vilhete was the only player available as a substitute for Southend, leaving manager Kevin Maher with limited options. The team's graphic even had to be edited to read "Sub" instead of the usual "Subs."

No Strikers Available

The situation was further exacerbated by the absence of a single striker on the team due to top scorer Harry Cardwell's knee injury. This added challenge left fans questioning the National League's decision-making.

Frustration on Social Media

Fans took to social media to express their frustration with the National League's handling of the situation. Many criticized the lack of support for youth players and called the situation "ridiculous" and an "absolute farce."

Difficulties in Squad Depth

Southend United has faced numerous off-the-field problems this season, including a transfer embargo that prevents the arrival of new signings. Manager Kevin Maher acknowledged the difficulties in improving the squad depth but expressed the club's commitment to finding solutions.

Past Success with Limited Bench

Despite previous instances of having a limited bench, Southend United has managed to find success on the field. In November, the team had only two players on the bench but still secured a victory against Chesterfield.

Southend United, currently sitting in 16th place in the National League, continues to navigate these challenges as they strive for improvement.
