Reports suggest that players from both teams formed a ring around Johnson as there was significant bleeding.

One person shared on X (formerly Twitter): "Paramedics are now on the ice, players are forming a ring around him and now screens are up around him. Awful scenes here at Sheffield Arena."

The game was immediately stopped, and screens were brought in to provide privacy for the player and medical staff attending to him.

CPR was administered at the scene.

Paramedics swiftly arrived before Johnson, an American player, was rushed to the hospital.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service received a call at around 8:20 PM on Saturday, and two crews along with a critical care paramedic responded.

The official Twitter account of the Nottingham Panthers initially tweeted: "Players are returning to the locker rooms."

An update was later provided, stating: "Fans have been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency."

Shocked fans took to Twitter to express their horror and concern over the incident.

One fan wrote: "Stuff of nightmares at the Panthers game tonight, praying for Adam Johnson."

Another tweeted: "That was undoubtedly the worst thing I've ever seen happen, I'm so sorry. We're all (Steelers family) absolutely sick with worry, praying for a miracle. From our #hockeyfamily to his, we have everything crossed."

A third fan expressed: "Sending prayers from a Storm fan #hockeyfamily is far more important than team rivalry. Hope he is okay. Thoughts with his family, fans, and teammates."

A fourth fan added: "Thoughts are with everyone who witnessed the incident tonight and love and prayers to Johnson. Manchester is with you."
