F1 Chief Opens Door for Disgraced Race Directors Return

Former Race Director Michael Masi Could Make Shocking Comeback

F1 chief Mohammed ben Sulayam has expressed his willingness to bring back disgraced race director Michael Masi to the sport. This potential return has the potential to upset Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, who were left fuming after Masi's "human error" at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Controversial Decision Cost Hamilton the Championship

Masi's mistake during the closing stages of the season-ending race had significant consequences. It cost Hamilton an opportunity to secure his historic seventh world title. Instead, Max Verstappen was able to take advantage of a safety car period and overtake Hamilton, ultimately clinching his maiden championship.

FIA President Stands by Masi

FIA president Ben Sulayem has defended Masi and expressed his support for the former race director. He stated that if there is an opportunity where the FIA needs someone like Masi, he would not hesitate to bring him back. Ben Sulayem acknowledged the backlash Masi faced and emphasized the importance of considering his expertise and suitability for the role.

Timing of Incident and Leadership Change

The incident involving Masi occurred just one week before Ben Sulayem assumed the position of FIA president. Masi was later replaced as race director and left the FIA last year. His decision to allow the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves with only two laps remaining proved to be a costly one for the British driver.

Hamilton's Missed Opportunities

As a result of Masi's controversial decision, Hamilton missed out on securing an eighth world title, which would have been a record-breaking achievement. Additionally, he was denied a fifth consecutive championship, which would have put him on par with Michael Schumacher's impressive record.
