Danny Mullins hits back at cousin Patrick after shocking bust-up

Danny Mullins has responded to his cousin Patrick Mullins after their heated altercation during a race in Limerick. Patrick, the son of renowned trainer Willie Mullins, has been referred to officials due to his post-race comments.

The Incident

During the race, Patrick, riding Gaelic Warrior, won the Grade 1 Guinness Faugheen Novice Chase. However, he was furious with Danny, who was riding runner-up Il Etait Temps, over an incident that occurred two fences from home. Danny appeared to try to cut down Patrick's inside, causing him to be angry.

Patrick's Anger

Patrick claimed that he had warned Danny not to go down his inside, as Gaelic Warrior tends to jump right. He was trying to maintain enough space in case his horse veered off course. When Danny ignored his warning, Patrick became enraged. He said, "I told Danny there will be a gap down my inner coming to the second last – do not come for it. He hasn't listened to me and luckily he hasn't got the two of us beaten. It didn't matter."

Danny's Response

Danny, who is an ambassador for Tote, defended his actions, stating, "It's one of those things – I'm always going to ride to win the race. I had a go and unfortunately I finished second – we had a go, that was the main thing."

Stewards' Decision

The stewards reviewed the incident and decided to pass it on to a senior official for further investigation. The stewards' report stated that Patrick had informed Danny about leaving a gap down the inner to give his horse a breather, and advised him not to go for it. Danny confirmed that the conversation had taken place. Based on this evidence, the matter was referred to a senior racing official.

Willie's Perspective

Willie Mullins, who was present at Leopardstown to witness Galopin Des Champs win the Savills Chase, observed the entire incident and jokingly commented that it seemed like the two cousins "wanted to kill each other."
