Controversial VAR Decisions Sparking Family Feuds, Survey Reveals

Controversial VAR Decisions Sparking Family Feuds, Survey Reveals

Friction and Fallings-Out

A recent survey has found that controversial decisions made by Video Assistant Referees (VAR) are causing rifts within families and friend groups. According to the study, one in eight football fans admitted that these decisions have led to arguments and fallings-out.

On-Pitch Referees vs VAR

Interestingly, the survey also revealed that only one in twelve fans said that decisions made by Premier League on-pitch referees resulted in serious anger. This stark contrast highlights the divisive nature of VAR decisions.

Arsenal Fans at the Forefront

Arsenal fans were found to be the most argumentative when it comes to VAR decisions, with a whopping 20% of Gunners' supporters admitting to bickering about these calls. Chelsea, Southampton, Manchester United, and Tottenham followed closely behind on the list.

Surprising Result for Aston Villa

In a surprising turn of events, Aston Villa fans seem to be the most peace-loving, with only 6% reporting conflicts after the game due to VAR decisions.

Main Causes of Arguments

The survey, conducted by betting site freebets.com and involving 2,000 Premier League fans, found that arguments were most often sparked by disallowed goals for offside and penalty decisions.

Referees Gain Popularity

According to Tim Agnew, a spokesman for freebets.com, the positive aspect of these disputes is that it has shifted some of the blame away from the referees themselves. Referees are now becoming more popular as fans direct their frustration towards VAR.

IFAB Considers Expansion

Last week, the International FA Board (IFAB) announced that it is considering expanding the use of VAR checks. Currently, the checks are limited to goals, penalties, and red cards. However, IFAB is now contemplating including corners, free kicks, and yellow cards in the review process.
