Brits Love Boxing Day Football for Festive Leftovers and Family Breaks, Survey Shows

Boxing Day football is a cherished tradition in the UK, and a recent survey has shed light on why it holds a special place in the hearts of football fans. The poll, which surveyed 2,000 football enthusiasts, revealed that 32% of fans plan to tune into women's football matches this festive season. But what makes Boxing Day football so appealing? Let's dive into the survey results.

Festive Leftovers and Family Breaks

The survey found that one of the best things about Boxing Day football is the opportunity to snack on festive leftovers while enjoying the matches. Additionally, many fans appreciate the fact that almost every team is in action during this period. But perhaps the most intriguing finding is that Boxing Day football serves as an excuse for fans to take a break from their families. 14% of respondents admitted using the matches as the perfect excuse to get some alone time, while 9% were simply happy to see their team play.

Love for the Congested Calendar

One of the standout findings from the survey is that football fans love the congested calendar around Christmas. A staggering 23% of fans expressed their delight at the sheer number of games being played during this time. It seems that the festive break provides fans with the opportunity to watch their favorite team multiple times, enhancing their enjoyment of the holiday season.

Goodbye to "Christmassy TV Finally"

Another interesting aspect revealed by the survey is that 23% of respondents were happy to bid farewell to "Christmassy TV finally." It appears that many football fans prefer the excitement of the matches over the usual holiday programming. The anticipation of the January transfer window opening also adds to the thrill for 12% of fans.

Football as a Festive Tradition

According to a spokesperson for Lottoland's Sportsbook, which commissioned the research, Boxing Day is a sacred time for football fans. While players and managers may occasionally complain about the crowded schedule, fans absolutely love it. The festive period as a whole offers a treasure trove of games to watch, allowing fans to take a break from family gatherings and indulge in their passion for football.

Bonding with Family and Betting on Matches

Over half of the respondents revealed that they use the opportunity to bond with family members over matches. Additionally, 34% of fans plan to place bets on matches during the festive period. Interestingly, 28% of those surveyed believe they are luckier with their wins during the Christmas season. It seems that the magic of the holidays may extend to the football pitch as well.

A Proud British Tradition

For many football fans, watching matches on December 26th is more enjoyable than any other time of year. In fact, 54% of respondents said it makes them proud to be British. While 59% prefer to watch the matches on TV, 15% are willing to brave the cold and attend games live, donning hats and scarves. Some fans opt to watch the matches at pubs or at a relative's house, ensuring they don't miss out on any footballing action.

The Dark Side of Boxing Day Football

While Boxing Day football brings joy to many, it can also be a source of disappointment. 28% of respondents admitted that the prospect of their team losing could ruin their entire festive period. Additionally, 43% of those surveyed expressed no sympathy for Premier League footballers who have to play matches on December 26th, while the rest of the nation enjoys a day off.

Women's Football Gains Popularity

Boxing Day football is not limited to men's matches. The survey found that 32% of respondents plan to tune into women's football over the festive period. This shows that the love for football extends beyond the traditional boundaries and includes support for women's teams as well.

As we approach the festive season, football fans across the UK are eagerly anticipating the Boxing Day matches. It's a time to indulge in festive leftovers, take a break from family gatherings, and immerse oneself in the excitement of football. So, get ready for a day filled with thrilling matches and nail-biting moments.
