Boxing Legend James Toney Reflects on Failed UFC Crossover, Prepares for Comeback Bout at 55

Boxing Legend James Toney Reflects on Failed UFC Crossover, Prepares for Comeback Bout at 55

Toney's Failed UFC Octagon Debut

James Toney, a boxing legend known for winning titles in three divisions during the 1990s, made headlines when he became the first boxer to trade the ring for the UFC octagon. However, his crossover venture did not go as planned. In 2010, Toney challenged UFC legend Randy Couture, only to be taken down and tapped out to a chokehold in the first round. Reflecting on the fight, Toney admitted that MMA was not his game but expressed confidence that things would have been different if given another chance.

The Rise of Crossover Fights

While Toney's UFC foray did not end well, in recent years, there has been an increase in MMA fighters crossing over to the world of boxing. This trend gained momentum after Conor McGregor's highly lucrative bout with Floyd Mayweather in 2015. Although McGregor lost to Mayweather, the financial success of the fight inspired other MMA fighters to step into the boxing ring.

Francis Ngannou's Impressive Performance

One of the most notable crossover clashes in recent memory was between former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou and boxing superstar Tyson Fury. Ngannou, known for his MMA prowess, gave Fury a tough ten-round fight in Saudi Arabia, with many believing he was unlucky to lose on points. Ngannou's performance highlighted the potential of MMA fighters in the boxing realm.

Toney's Desire for Redemption

Despite his disappointing UFC debut, James Toney still harbors a desire for redemption. He expressed his wish for a boxing match against Randy Couture, claiming that while he couldn't wrestle with Couture, the UFC legend couldn't match his boxing skills. Toney may not have had the opportunity to face Couture in the ring again, but he did return to boxing six months after his MMA venture and fought nine more times over the course of seven years.

A Comeback Bout at 55

Now, at the age of 55, James Toney is preparing for yet another comeback bout. He will face off against Razor Ruddock, who is 59, in an exhibition match in Jamaica. Despite his age, Toney remains confident, stating that he can still defeat anyone on the planet. He proudly declares himself as the original old-school fighter, claiming that while others were taught to fight, he was born to fight.
