BBC in Talks with Gary Lineker After Twitter Controversy

BBC in Talks with Gary Lineker After Twitter Controversy

Lineker Criticizes Government's Rwanda Plan

Gary Lineker, the host of Match of the Day, has once again found himself at the center of a Twitter storm after criticizing the Government's Rwanda plan. The 63-year-old TV host urged ministers to come up with a "fair new plan for refugees" instead of the current scheme. In response to his tweets, BBC bosses are said to be in discussions with Lineker.

Together With Refugees Campaign

Lineker's comments came after he co-signed a letter with other celebrities as part of the Together With Refugees campaign. The letter criticized Britain's refugee system, calling it "ever-more uncaring, chaotic, and costly." The campaign is advocating for a new system that better reflects the will of the British people.

BBC Social Media Guidelines

The BBC is reportedly reviewing its social media guidelines following Lineker's tweets. The updated guidelines, implemented in September, allow presenters to discuss issues that matter to them but also emphasize the importance of remaining civil and not questioning anyone's character. Talks between BBC bosses and Lineker are expected to take place.

Lineker's Previous Controversies

This is not the first time Lineker has sparked controversy with his social media posts. In March, he faced criticism for comparing the Government's rhetoric on immigration to that of 1930s' Germany. After a review, the BBC decided to allow its top stars to express their own views on social media, as long as they refrain from engaging in political campaigning.

Response from Grant Shapps

Grant Shapps, the cabinet minister, responded to Lineker's comments by suggesting that the host should stick to presenting football. Shapps disagreed with Lineker's views on immigration and questioned the morality of illegal entry into the country. He also referenced previous warnings the BBC had issued to Lineker regarding his social media activity.

It remains to be seen how the BBC will address the current situation with Lineker.
