ITV Dismisses Rumours of Cancelling 'This Morning' Amid Phillip Schofield Scandal

Listen to the Article

ITV has quashed speculation that its popular daytime show, This Morning, could be cancelled following the recent scandal involving Phillip Schofield. The 61-year-old TV stalwart resigned from the network. His talent agency subsequently dropped it after he confessed to a relationship with a younger male colleague from the show, a relationship he described as "unwise, but not illegal". The whispers about this relationship first started making rounds in 2020.

ITV confirmed it had launched an investigation when the rumours first emerged, but Schofield and the involved employee consistently denied the affair. The network felt compelled to clarify its stance after questions were raised about the extent of the management's knowledge of Schofield's actions.

In response to the weekend's newspaper reports speculating about the show's future, an ITV spokesperson clarified, "As we stated on record yesterday, This Morning is not under any review, and there are no plans to axe the show. This Morning will resume as usual tomorrow."

Holly Willoughby, Schofield's former co-host, publicly shared her feelings of betrayal after learning that Schofield had lied to her about the affair. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she revealed, "When reports of this relationship first surfaced, I asked Phil directly if this was true and was told it was not. It's been very hurtful to find out this was a lie."

Schofield expressed deep remorse for his dishonesty about the relationship. The younger colleague, who is not a public figure, had wished to keep the relationship private. The affair took place before Schofield publicly came out as gay in 2020, during his marriage to Stephanie Lowe.

His former agents at YMU Group emphasised that their business values "honesty and integrity" and that their relationships are "based entirely on trust". Schofield's departure from This Morning last week came amidst reports of a strained relationship with Willoughby. Rumours of tension between the pair had been circulating since Schofield's brother, Tim Schofield, was convicted of child sex offences. Willoughby is said to return to This Morning on June 5.
