Who is Alejandro Mayorkas?

Alejandro Mayorkas is an American lawyer and politician who has served in several key positions, including leading the U.S. Department of Justice's Criminal Division and currently serving as Joe Biden's Secretary of Homeland Security.

Early Life and Career

Alejandro Mayorkas was born on November 24, 1959, in Havana, Cuba. In August 1960, his family fled the country and settled in Miami, Florida, before eventually moving to Los Angeles, California. Mayorkas attended the University of California, Berkeley, and Loyola Law School before becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. In 1998, he was appointed as U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California by Bill Clinton.

Government Positions

In 2009, Mayorkas was appointed by Barack Obama to serve as the director of Citizenship and Immigration Services. He remained in this position until the end of the Obama Administration. On November 23, 2020, Joe Biden nominated Mayorkas to be his Secretary of Homeland Security, and he was sworn into the position on February 2, 2021, making him the first Latino immigrant to serve in this role.

Personal Life

Alejandro Mayorkas is married to Tanya, and they have two daughters together named Amelia and Giselle.

Impeachment Push

In November 2023, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene attempted to impeach Mayorkas for his conduct at the U.S. and Mexican border. However, the resolution was blocked by The White House. Greene expressed her outrage, stating that Republican voters would be angry about this decision. The Department of Homeland Security defended Mayorkas, emphasizing that he has been focused on keeping Americans safe and urged Congress to work with them to address the country's broken immigration system.
