New Leadership Contest to be Held
Mark Drakeford, the leader of Welsh Labour, has announced his resignation with immediate effect after five years in the job. This decision will trigger a new leadership contest, and Drakeford expressed his hope that a new First Minister could be in place before Easter 2024.
Drakeford's Resignation Statement
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Drakeford said, "When I stood for election as Leader of Welsh Labour, I said I would stand down during the current Senedd term. That time has now come. It has been a great privilege to serve as leader of this party."
Remaining as First Minister
At a news conference in Cardiff, Drakeford confirmed that he will remain "as First Minister in the full sense of that job" in the meantime. He emphasized that he still has a lot to achieve over the coming months and that there will be time for reflection and political analysis after he steps down.
Slump in Poll Ratings
Drakeford has faced a decline in poll ratings and criticism for policies such as the widespread use of 20mph limits on Welsh roads. However, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer praised Drakeford as a "titan" of Welsh politics, highlighting his commitment to public service. Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies also expressed respect for Drakeford's dedication to the role of First Minister.

Tributes from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak paid tribute to Drakeford, wishing him the best as he moves on from his years of public service. Sunak emphasized the continued collaboration between the UK government and the Welsh Government to create opportunities for people across Wales.
Personal Loss
Earlier this year, Drakeford faced the sudden passing of his wife, Clare. The couple had been married since 1977 and had three children.
