Tech giants TikTok and Snapchat have joined forces to tackle the issue of AI-generated child sexual abuse images. The companies have pledged their support to the clampdown, which comes amid concerns that the misuse of artificial intelligence could overwhelm the internet. The initiative was announced at an event with Home Secretary Suella Braverman. A total of 27 organizations, including the Internet Watch Foundation and the governments of the US and Australia, have backed the move.
Combatting an Online Scourge
The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has revealed that thousands of AI-generated images can be found on the dark web, with some being so realistic that they are considered real under UK law. Home Secretary Suella Braverman emphasized the importance of tech giants working with law enforcement to tackle the spread of these images. Braverman stated, "The pictures are computer-generated but they often show real people – it’s depraved and damages lives. The pace at which these images have spread online is shocking and that’s why we have convened such a wide group of organizations to tackle this issue head-on. We cannot let this go on unchecked."
Call for Short-Term Business Visas
In related news, the City of London is calling for an increase in short-term business visas to allow more international workers to contribute to the development of AI technology. Chris Hayward, Policy Chairman, highlighted the importance of nurturing "home-grown" talent in this rapidly evolving sector.
