Introduction
Suella Braverman, who has recently been sacked as Home Secretary for the second time, has had an interesting childhood. Let's take a closer look at her upbringing and how she acquired her name.
The Early Years
Suella Braverman, originally named Sue-Ellen Cassiana Fernandes, was born on April 3, 1980, to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father. She grew up in Wembley, London, after being born in Harrow.
Inspired by TV Soap Dallas
An interesting revelation came earlier this year when it was discovered that Braverman was actually named after a lead character from the popular TV soap Dallas. Fierce and determined Sue-Ellen Ewing, portrayed by Linda Gray, was the wife of the notorious oil baron J.R. Ewing.
Braverman shared, "So my name is actually Sue-Ellen because my mum was a fan of Dallas and thought this would be a great name for her daughter. I've been plagued ever since. But my primary school teachers didn't like the hyphen. So they came up with Suella on my little tag for my coat, and that stuck."

She even admitted, "I was actually more of a Dynasty fan, but that might be controversial."
Education and Career
Braverman pursued her education at Queens' College, Cambridge, studying law. She later completed a Master's degree in European and French law at Pantheon-Sorbonne University. During her time at Cambridge, she served as the President of the Cambridge University Conservative Association.
After qualifying as an attorney in New York, Braverman embraced her political career as a Conservative. On her website, she states that the Conservative Party believes in the importance of one's destination rather than their starting point.
Personal Life
Suella Braverman tied the knot with Rael Braverman in February 2018, surrounded by more than 100 guests. The couple has two children together, son George, born in July 2019, and daughter Gabriella, born in March 2021.
Braverman made history by becoming the first cabinet minister to take maternity leave after the birth of her daughter.
The Recent Controversy
Braverman's recent dismissal stems from accusations of exacerbating violent clashes on Armistice Day by criticizing Metropolitan Police chiefs. Following her removal from the cabinet, the former Home Secretary released a brief statement expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to serve and promising more to come in the future.
Cabinet Reshuffle and Political Developments
As a result of the ongoing turmoil within the Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak is conducting a significant cabinet reshuffle. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will replace Braverman as Home Secretary, while former Prime Minister David Cameron has made a surprising return to politics as the Foreign Secretary.
Additionally, Health Minister Neil O'Brien, a key figure behind the smoking ban, has resigned from his role, and veteran Schools Minister Nick Gibb has also stepped down from the government.
