Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has voiced his support for a change in the law on assisted dying. This comes after TV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen sparked a national debate on the issue. Sir Keir believes there are "grounds for changing the law" to allow those who are terminally ill to have the option. The discussion has gained momentum as Dame Esther, founder of Childline, revealed that she may consider ending her own life if her condition does not improve.
A Personal Opinion
During a visit to Nato troops in Estonia, Sir Keir expressed his personal view on the matter. He stated, "I personally do think there are grounds for changing the law." He also highlighted that traditionally, this issue has been addressed through private member's bills and free votes, which he believes is appropriate.
Past Support for Legislation Change
This is not the first time Sir Keir has backed a change in the law on assisted dying. He previously supported a legislation change when the issue was voted on in the Commons back in 2015.
Health Secretary's Response
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins chose not to express her opinion on the matter. When asked if she thought it was time for another vote in Parliament, she responded, "As Health Secretary, I think it's right that I don't express an opinion on this."
